Effective treatment of an occupational illness means eliminating the workplace cause. OHCC clinicians develop recommendations to change workplace conditions to allow patients to keep working, or to return to work safely, without risk of making illness worse. If the workplace cannot be changed, patients are given recommendations on what exposures and conditions they should avoid to guide their future employment choices.
Ideally, OHCC providers work with the patient's primary care provider, provides ongoing care with medications and other treatment. OHCC clinicians also frequently refer to other specialist physicians for assistance in situations where that expertise is needed.
